That means there is a definite connection between your lifestyle and diet and whether you are suffering from constipation and hemorrhoids.

Having hemorrhoids and constipation at the same time is very common. In fact, constipation is considered as the number one cause of the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Constipation can be due to various factors, such as aging, intake of medications or excessive use of laxatives. Regardless of what triggered constipation, straining while passing stools is known as the underlying cause most hemorrhoids cases. The longer body wastes stays inside the colon, the more water is absorbed, thus leaving it hard and dry. The contractions of the walls of the intestines have to work doubly hard in order to remove these wasted out of a sluggish body.

Constipation is often defined with two or more symptoms, such as the following:

  • Fewer than three defecations per week
  • Having hard and dry stools
  • Excessive straining during evacuation
  • Pain when passing stools
  • Feeling of fullness after moving bowels
  • Palpitating or using fingers to assist elimination of stools

If you are susceptible to constipation then you are prone to having hemorrhoids. What to do if you have hemorrhoids? The best thing that you can do is to start drinking more water per day, as water can serve as a lubricant, thus relieving constipation and hemorrhoids. You should also add 20 to 35 grams of fiber into your diet. Fiber is helpful in absorbing more water, thereby making the stools softer and bulkier. Fiber can be obtained from various food sources, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables and beans.

The consumption of cheese, processed foods and meat, on the other hand, should be avoided as much as possible. It is also necessary to reduce fat intake and opt for fat alternatives instead. If you cannot go on through the day without having milk or cheese, it would be best to opt for varieties that contain lower amount of fats. Avoiding the consumption of fried or oily foods is also necessary if you want to prevent the development of mild or chronic hemorrhoids.

Daily exercises are also helpful against hemorrhoids and constipation. If you are not used to doing exercises, you can start by doing walking exercises every morning to gradually build up your body’s endurance. Once you get started with these changes, you can easily see the results. These cannot only make you feel better mentally, but it can also make your body feel lighter and healthier. However, for severe cases of hemorrhoids, such as thrombosed external hemorrhoids, it would be best to consult your physician immediately.
